Fuel Type
Gas fireplaces are most common in Pakistani cities. They produce moderate, controlled heat.
Wood-burning fireplaces are traditional in hill areas and produce more intense heat, requiring heat-resistant stone near the firebox.
Electric and decorative fireplaces produce little heat, giving complete freedom of stone choice.
The fuel type affects which stones you can use close to the fire and whether you need a heat-resistant hearth.
Prefabricated or Custom Built
Prefabricated surrounds are quicker and more economical. Custom masonry with stone cladding takes longer and costs more but allows unique designs, full-height walls, built-in shelves and lighting.
Stone Type
- Marble (Botticino, Cream Marfil, Silky Black, Chocolate Brown): classic and elegant.
- Granite (Galaxy Black, Tan Brown, Brown Wave): very heat-resistant; excellent for hearths.
- Onyx (Pakistani green onyx): spectacular when backlit, best kept away from direct heat.
- Travertine: warm, textured and natural.
- Porcelain slabs: heat-resistant, large-format and modern.

Size and Location
Larger surrounds and full-height feature walls require more stone and more labour. Fireplaces on upper floors add transport and handling cost. Curved or angled designs need precise fabrication.
Other Cost Factors
- Hearth slab: a thick granite hearth protects the floor from heat and embers.
- Mantel shelf: a projecting stone shelf adds material and support work.
- Backlighting: LED lighting behind onyx adds electrical work.
- Ventilation and safety: chimneys, flues and gas fittings must be installed by qualified professionals.
- Finishing: polishing, sealing and edge details.

Design Tips
- Use granite for the hearth and the area closest to the fire.
- Use marble or onyx for the decorative surround and upper wall.
- Bookmatched marble or porcelain slabs create a dramatic feature wall.
