What Is Considered a Small Kitchen?
A small kitchen is typically under about 70–100 square feet — common in apartments and smaller houses. Layouts are usually galley (two parallel counters), single-wall or compact L-shapes.
Countertop area: often 15–30 square feet.
What Is Considered a Medium Kitchen?
Medium kitchens range from about 100 to 200 square feet — common in 5–10 marla houses. L-shaped and U-shaped layouts are typical, sometimes with a small peninsula.
Countertop area: often 30–50 square feet.
What Is Considered a Large Kitchen?
Large kitchens exceed about 200 square feet — common in 1-kanal and larger homes in DHA, Bahria Town and similar areas. They often include an island and sometimes a separate dirty kitchen for heavy cooking.
Countertop area: 50 square feet or more.
How Does Kitchen Size Affect Design?
Layout: small kitchens suit galley and single-wall layouts; large kitchens suit islands and U-shapes.
Countertop choice: in small kitchens, light countertops make the space feel larger; in large kitchens, dramatic stones or contrasting islands work well.
Storage: small kitchens need tall units and clever corner storage.
Budget: countertop cost scales with area, so material choice matters more in large kitchens.
Kitchens: Old vs New
Older Pakistani homes often had small, enclosed kitchens with masonry counters. Newer homes favour open-plan kitchens connected to dining and lounge areas, often with a separate dirty kitchen for frying and heavy cooking.
What Share of the Home Does the Kitchen Take?
Kitchens typically occupy around 8–15% of a home's floor area, depending on lifestyle and design.
Planning Tips
- Measure your kitchen carefully before planning counters
- Keep the work triangle efficient
- Allow walkways of at least 36–42 inches
- Plan countertop space beside the stove and sink
