Backsplash Ideas for Calacatta-Look Marble and Quartz

Calacatta-look stone is a statement in any kitchen. Its bright white base and bold veins draw the eye, so the backsplash needs to support it rather than compete. Here is how to understand the stone and choose a backsplash that lets it shine.

Understanding Calacatta

Composition. Natural Calacatta is a calcite marble. Calacatta-look quartz — such as FB Marble's Calacatta Gold, Calacatta Wave and Calacatta Nova — is engineered from natural quartz and resin with similar veining.

Origin. The name comes from a rare white marble quarried in Italy. Today, the look is widely recreated in quartz and porcelain, making it accessible to Pakistani homeowners.

Iconic design. A bright white background with thick, dramatic grey or gold veins — bolder than the soft veining of Carrara.

Strength. Natural Calacatta marble is soft and etches easily. Calacatta-look quartz is harder, non-porous and does not etch, which makes it far more practical for kitchens.

Backsplash Designs That Work

Blank Stone: A Full-Height Slab

Running the same Calacatta stone up the wall creates a seamless, luxurious look with no grout lines. It is also the easiest option to clean behind a busy stove. Plan the slab layout so veins flow naturally from counter to wall.

Bookmatched Feature Panel

Two slabs mirrored side by side behind the hob create a dramatic focal point, like a work of art.

Simple White Tiles

Plain white subway or square tiles let the counter lead. Choose a soft white rather than a stark one if your stone has warm gold veins.

Textured Neutrals

Handmade-look tiles in off-white or cream add subtle texture without adding colour.

Metallic Accents

Brass trims or gold-toned mosaic strips echo gold veining and suit glamorous kitchens.

Contrast Behind Open Shelving

Deep green, navy or charcoal tiles in a limited area can make the white stone glow — use carefully.

What to Avoid

Busy patterned tiles, strong colours across the whole wall, and dark grout that creates a grid competing with the veins.

Practical Tips

  • Keep grout lines thin and use light grey grout.
  • Plan vein direction before cutting slab backsplashes.
  • Use the same stone for window sills for a cohesive look.
