Why Is White Marble Delicate?
Carrara-type marble is a calcite stone. It is soft (about 3 on the Mohs scale), porous enough to absorb liquids and reactive to acids. Coloured liquids show clearly against the white background, and acids leave dull etch marks.
Tools to Clean White Marble
- Soft microfibre cloths
- A spray bottle for diluted cleaner
- pH-neutral stone cleaner or very mild dish soap
- Baking soda
- 6% hydrogen peroxide
- Plastic wrap and tape for poultices
- A plastic spatula

Method 1: Warm Water and Mild Soap
For daily cleaning, mix a few drops of mild soap in warm water. Wipe the surface, rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry. This removes dust, fingerprints and fresh spills.
Method 2: Water and Hydrogen Peroxide
For organic stains — tea, coffee, haldi, fruit, leaves — mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide into a paste, apply it over the stain, cover with plastic wrap and leave overnight. Peroxide works especially well on white marble.
Method 3: Water and Baking Soda
For oil and grease stains, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply 5 mm thick, cover and leave for 24 hours. The baking soda draws the oil out as it dries.
Method 4: Marble-Specific Cleaners
Commercial pH-neutral marble cleaners are formulated to clean without damaging the sealer or polish. They are ideal for weekly cleaning.
