Granite vs Concrete Countertops: Buying Guide

Concrete countertops are popular in industrial and minimalist designs, while granite remains the classic natural stone choice. Both are heavy, both are durable in their own ways, but they behave very differently in daily use. Here is a comparison to help you decide.

Cost

Granite: In FB Marble's current list, Pakistani granite starts at about Rs 250 per square foot and imported granite at about Rs 700. Prices are predictable and quotes are straightforward.

Concrete: Cast-in-place or precast concrete counters are labour-intensive. Moulds, reinforcement, curing, grinding, sealing and waxing all add cost. A high-quality, well-finished concrete counter can cost as much as mid-range granite or more.

Appearance

Concrete has a matte, uniform, industrial look. It can be tinted, polished or embedded with glass or stone chips. It suits modern and loft-style interiors.

Granite offers natural patterns, crystals and colours, with polished, honed or leathered finishes. It suits almost any style.

Durability

Concrete is strong but prone to hairline cracks as it cures and as buildings move. It is porous and can stain easily from oil, haldi and acidic foods unless sealed thoroughly and often.

Granite is harder, more stain-resistant and more heat-resistant. It does not crack under normal conditions when properly supported.

Heat Resistance

Granite handles hot pots very well. Concrete tolerates heat, but sealers and waxes can be damaged by hot pans.

Maintenance

Concrete needs regular sealing and waxing, and stains are common in kitchens with heavy cooking.

Granite needs periodic sealing for light colours; dark granites need very little care.

Weight and Installation

Both are heavy. Concrete may need reinforced cabinets and takes days or weeks to cure if cast in place. Granite is fabricated off-site and installed in a day.

Conclusion

For a hard-working Pakistani kitchen with daily oil and spices, granite is more practical and predictable. If you love the concrete look, consider concrete-look quartz or porcelain — they offer the industrial style without the cracking and staining. FB Marble stocks grey quartz and porcelain designs that achieve this look.
