Can Hot Pans Damage Granite?
In most cases, no. Granite will not melt, scorch or discolour from a hot pan the way quartz or laminate can. However, two issues are worth knowing about: damage to the sealer and thermal shock.

The Sealer Can Weaken
Repeated exposure to very high heat in the same spot can weaken the sealer on light granites, making that area more likely to absorb oil and stains. Dark, dense granites are less affected.
What Is Thermal Shock?
Thermal shock happens when one part of a stone heats or cools much faster than the surrounding area. The uneven expansion creates stress, and in rare cases this can cause a crack. Thermal shock is more likely:

- Near sink and hob cut-outs, where the stone is narrow
- At seams
- When a very hot pan is placed on a cold counter in winter
- When cold water is poured onto a very hot area
How to Protect Your Granite
- Use trivets for very hot pans, especially near cut-outs and seams.
- Let pans cool on the stove for a moment before moving them.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes — no ice on hot spots.
- Keep heat-producing appliances on a board if they run for hours.
- Reseal regularly, especially beside the stove.
How to Reseal a Granite Countertop
Choose Your Sealer
Use a penetrating (impregnating) sealer designed for granite.
Clean the Surface
Clear the counter, wash with mild soap and water, and let it dry for at least 24 hours.
Apply the Sealer
Spread the sealer evenly with a lint-free cloth, let it soak in for the time on the label, then wipe off all excess before it dries.
Let It Cure
Avoid water and use for 24–48 hours.
Granite vs Quartz for Heat
Granite clearly outperforms quartz for heat. If you cook at high heat every day, granite around the stove is the practical choice, even if you prefer quartz elsewhere.
