How to Shine Granite Countertops Naturally

Polished granite has a deep, natural gloss that comes from diamond polishing at the factory. You do not need harsh chemicals or expensive products to keep it — gentle, natural care works best and protects the sealer too. Here is how to keep granite shining day after day.

What Is Granite?

Granite is an igneous rock made of interlocking crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica. Its shine is not a coating; it comes from the polished faces of these hard crystals. That is why granite stays glossy for decades when cared for properly.

Why Granite Looks Dull

Dullness usually comes from residue rather than wear: soap film, grease from cooking, hard-water minerals, or a hazy layer of old sealer. Harsh cleaners and abrasive pads can also dull the sealer and leave the surface looking flat.

Natural Ways to Keep Granite Shining

1. Warm water and mild soap. A few drops of colourless dish soap in warm water clean without leaving residue.

2. Rinse well. Wipe again with clean water to remove all soap.

3. Dry and buff. Buff with a dry microfibre cloth after cleaning. This simple step brings up the shine immediately and prevents water spots.

4. Alcohol and water. A 1:1 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water in a spray bottle is a natural, streak-free cleaner and disinfectant.

5. Baking soda paste. For light stains, a paste of baking soda and water lifts marks without scratching.

6. Avoid oils on polished granite. Cooking oils and "natural polish" tips leave a sticky film that attracts dust.

7. Avoid acids. Lemon and vinegar, often recommended as natural cleaners, weaken the sealer over time.

White Granites That Show Shine Beautifully

Light granites reflect light especially well when polished:

Light granites also need regular sealing, which keeps them looking bright.

A Simple Daily Routine

After cooking, wipe crumbs away, clean with soapy water, rinse, and buff dry. Weekly, use a granite cleaner. Every year, test and reseal light granites.

When to Call a Professional

If granite remains dull after thorough cleaning, it may need professional re-polishing. FB Marble can restore the factory shine with diamond polishing pads.
