How to Shine Quartz Countertops Safely

Quartz comes from the factory with a polished finish that never needs sealing or waxing. If your quartz looks dull, the shine has not disappeared — it is usually hidden under residue. A few simple steps will bring it back.

How Quartz Gets Its Shine

During manufacturing, crushed quartz and resin are pressed into slabs, cured and then polished with progressively finer diamond abrasives. The gloss is part of the surface itself. You do not need to "add" shine with products; you only need to remove whatever is covering it.

What Makes Quartz Look Dull?

  • Soap film left after cleaning without rinsing
  • A thin layer of cooking grease, especially near the stove
  • Hard-water mineral spots
  • Fine dust that settles during Pakistan's dry months
  • Residue from the wrong cleaning products
  • Micro-scratches from abrasive scrubbers

Step 1: Daily Cleaning

Wipe the counter with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap using a microfibre cloth. This handles crumbs, flour, chai drips and light grease.

Step 2: Rinse Thoroughly

This is the step most people skip. Soap residue is the most common cause of a dull, streaky look. After cleaning, wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water.

Step 3: Dry and Buff

Buff the surface dry with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. This removes water spots and brings up the shine immediately.

Step 4: Weekly Deep Clean

Once a week, spray a quartz-safe surface cleaner over the whole counter, leave it for a minute and wipe with a non-scratch sponge. Focus on the area behind the stove and around the sink.

Step 5: Deal with Dust First

Before cleaning, dust the counter with a dry cloth. Wiping a wet cloth over sand and dust can create fine scratches over time.

Step 6: Use Shine Products Wisely

Quartz-specific shine sprays are optional and can add a little extra gloss. Avoid wax-based furniture polish, oils and multi-surface sprays that leave a sticky film.

What to Avoid

Abrasive powders, steel wool, oven cleaner, undiluted bleach and strong degreasers can damage the resin and make the dullness permanent.

When Shine Does Not Return

If the surface still looks hazy after thorough cleaning and buffing, it may have chemical damage or fine scratches. Professional re-polishing can help in some cases. Contact FB Marble for advice.
