How to Make Marble Countertops Shine Again

Polished marble reflects light beautifully, which is why it is so loved for floors, dining tables and vanities across Pakistan. But daily use slowly steals that shine. Acids etch the surface, grit scratches it and the wrong cleaners leave film. Here is how to bring the gloss back.

Why Does Marble Lose Its Shine?

Marble is a soft, calcium-based stone. Acidic liquids — lemon juice, vinegar, cold drinks, tomato sauce, some bathroom cleaners — react with the calcite and leave dull etch marks. Sand and dust carried in on shoes act like sandpaper on floors. Soap and cleaner residue builds into a cloudy film.

Know Your Finish

Polished: glossy and reflective. Shows etching clearly but can be restored to a mirror shine.

Honed: smooth and matte by design. It will never be "shiny", and that is intentional.

Tumbled or brushed: textured, mostly for floors and outdoor areas.

Before trying to polish, make sure your marble was polished to begin with.

Preliminary Steps

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild soap.
  2. Remove any stains with a poultice — polishing will not remove deep stains.
  3. Let the marble dry completely.

Option 1: Call a Professional

For floors, large counters or deep, widespread etching, professional restoration is the best route. Technicians grind, hone and polish with a series of diamond pads, then apply a final polishing compound. The result can look like brand-new stone. FB Marble provides marble restoration in Lahore.

Option 2: Marble Polishing Powder

For small etch marks on tables and vanities, marble polishing powder works well. Sprinkle a little powder on the dull spot, add a few drops of water, and rub with a damp cloth or buffing pad in small circles. Keep going until the shine returns, then rinse and dry.

Option 3: Home Polishing Kits

Kits include polishing compounds and pads designed for small areas. Follow the instructions carefully and work in sections.

What Not to Use

Avoid car polish, furniture wax, vinegar-based "shine" tips and abrasive cream cleaners. They can leave residue or cause more damage.

Keeping the Shine

  • Dry marble after cleaning to avoid water spots
  • Use coasters, trays and placemats
  • Seal regularly to reduce staining
  • Place mats at entrances to trap grit
  • Use only pH-neutral cleaners
