Does Your Marble Need Sealing?
Do the water-drop test. Pour a few drops of water on the marble and wait 10–15 minutes. If the stone darkens under the drop, water is soaking in and it is time to seal. If the water beads up and the stone stays the same colour, your sealer is still working. Kitchen and vanity surfaces usually need re-sealing every 6–12 months; floors and walls less often.

What You Need
- An impregnating (penetrating) sealer made for natural stone
- pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap
- Lint-free microfibre cloths or a foam brush
- Rubber gloves and good ventilation
Avoid "topical" coatings that sit on the surface like varnish. They can peel, look cloudy and trap moisture.
Step 1: Clean Thoroughly
Remove everything from the surface. Clean with warm water and a mild cleaner, then rinse well. If there are existing stains, treat them first with a poultice — sealing over a stain locks it in.
Step 2: Let It Dry Completely
Marble must be bone dry before sealing. Wait at least 24 hours after cleaning, especially in humid monsoon months. Moisture in the pores blocks the sealer from penetrating.
Step 3: Apply the Sealer
Work in small sections. Apply a generous, even coat with a cloth or foam brush and let it soak in for the time stated on the product label, usually 5–15 minutes. Keep the surface wet during this time; add more sealer to areas that absorb quickly, such as around the sink.
Step 4: Remove the Excess and Cure
Wipe away all remaining sealer with a clean, dry cloth before it gets tacky. Leftover sealer dries into a hazy film. Most sealers need 24–48 hours to cure; avoid water and heavy use during that time. Some products recommend a second coat — apply it after the first one has soaked in.
Tips for Best Results
- Test first. Try the sealer on a hidden corner to check it does not darken the stone.
- Seal edges and cut-outs. Water often enters through the sink cut-out and backsplash joints.
- Keep the room ventilated. Many sealers have solvents; open windows and keep children away.
- Use the right cleaner afterwards. Acidic or harsh cleaners wear away the sealer faster.
What Sealing Cannot Do
Sealing slows down staining but does not stop etching. Lemon, vinegar and some bathroom cleaners react with the calcium in marble and dull the polish whether it is sealed or not. Wipe acidic spills immediately and use cutting boards and trays.
