Why Rust Is So Difficult on Marble
Marble is porous and made of calcium carbonate. Rust particles penetrate the pores, and most household rust removers โ which rely on acids โ dissolve the marble itself, leaving dull etch marks. That is why special care is needed.
Steps for Removing Rust from Marble
- Clean the area with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and dry it.
- Choose a marble-safe rust remover. Look for products specifically labelled safe for marble and calcareous stone.
- Apply as a poultice. Mix the remover with a poultice powder (or use a ready-made poultice) and spread it about 5 mm thick over the stain.
- Cover and wait. Cover with plastic wrap, tape the edges and leave for the time stated on the product โ often 24โ48 hours.
- Remove and rinse. Scrape off the dried poultice with a plastic spatula, rinse and dry.
- Repeat if needed. Deep stains may need several applications.
- Polish and reseal. Restore any dull areas with marble polishing powder and reseal the stone.

Where Rust Stains Happen on Marble
- Bathrooms: under shaving foam, deodorant and shampoo cans.
- Staircases: around iron railing posts and balusters.
- Floors: under metal furniture legs and plant stands.
- Kitchens: under ghee tins and iron racks.
- Outdoors: from iron grills, gates and fixings.
- Within the stone: some marbles contain iron minerals that oxidise when exposed to moisture.
How to Prevent Rust Stains
- Keep metal cans and containers on plastic trays.
- Use stainless steel or plastic fittings near marble.
- Seal marble regularly to slow absorption.
- Fix leaking pipes and taps promptly.
- Paint or coat iron railings where they meet stone.
- Keep marble floors dry.
