What Is Countertop Depth?
Depth is measured from the back wall to the front edge of the countertop, including any overhang.
Standard Depth of a Kitchen Counter
About 25 inches (635 mm) — a 24-inch (600 mm) base cabinet plus about 1 inch (25 mm) of front overhang.
Standard Depth of a Bathroom Counter
About 18–22 inches (450–560 mm), depending on the basin size and room space. Compact vanities can be as shallow as 16 inches.
Standard Depth for Kitchen Island Countertops
- No seating: 24–36 inches
- Seating on one side: about 36–42 inches
- Seating and storage on both sides: 42–48 inches or more

Factors That Determine Depth
Base cabinet size. Standard cabinets are 24 inches deep.
Ergonomics. Most adults can comfortably reach about 24–25 inches.
Appliances. Hobs, ovens, dishwashers and sinks are designed around standard depths.
Overhang. Protects cabinet doors from drips.
Wall straightness. In many homes, walls are not perfectly straight, so depth may vary along a run — templating accounts for this.
Masonry counters. In Pakistani kitchens with brick counters, depth often varies from about 22 to 26 inches.
Deeper Counters
Some homeowners choose deeper counters (26–30 inches) for more workspace or appliance garages at the back. This needs custom cabinets and can make wall cabinets harder to reach.
Shallower Counters
In narrow galley kitchens, shallower counters (around 20 inches) can free walkway space, though they limit appliance choices.
