What Is Countertop Overhang?
It is the distance the countertop extends past the face of the base cabinets. Every counter has a small front overhang; islands and bars often have a larger one for seating.
Standard Front Overhang
The standard front overhang for kitchen counters is about 1 inch (25 mm) beyond the cabinet doors. This:

- Directs drips away from cabinet doors
- Gives a finished look
- Makes wiping crumbs into your hand easier
Bathroom vanities typically have a slightly smaller overhang of about ยพ inch to 1 inch.
Kitchen Island Countertop Overhang
For seating at counter height (about 36 inches):
- Standard seating overhang: 10โ12 inches (250โ300 mm)
- Comfortable knee space: 12โ15 inches
Raised Bar Top Overhang
For bar-height counters (about 42 inches):
- Standard overhang: about 8โ12 inches
Higher bar stools need slightly less knee space.
Side Overhang
At the ends of counters, a small overhang of about 1 inch is typical, unless the counter ends against a wall.
How Far Can Granite Overhang Without Support?
As a general guide for 20 mm granite and quartz:

- Up to about 6โ8 inches: usually fine without extra support.
- Beyond 10โ12 inches: steel brackets, corbels or legs are recommended.
- 30 mm slabs: can overhang somewhat further.
Always follow your fabricator's advice โ supports depend on stone type, thickness and the length of the overhang.
Can You Extend the Overhang on an Island?
Yes, but larger overhangs need hidden steel supports or decorative legs. A waterfall end is another elegant way to support a seating overhang.
Tips
- Use rounded edges where people sit.
- Plan electrical sockets so they are not hidden under overhangs.
- Leave enough legroom: about 24 inches width per seat.
