What Are Solid Surface Countertops?
Solid surface is a man-made material made from acrylic or polyester resin mixed with mineral fillers such as alumina trihydrate. It is cast into sheets or moulded into shapes like vanity tops with built-in basins. The colour runs through the entire thickness.
How Much Do They Cost?
Solid surface pricing is often similar to entry-level or mid-range quartz, depending on brand, colour and complexity. Branded imported products cost more than local or generic versions.
Additional Cost Factors
- Integrated sinks: moulded basins add cost but create a seamless look.
- Custom shapes: curves, coves and thermoformed shapes require extra labour.
- Thickness: thicker sheets cost more.
- Colour and pattern: premium designs cost more.
- Installation: seamless joining requires skilled installers.
Benefits
- Seamless joints that are almost invisible
- Integrated sinks with no gaps for dirt
- Non-porous, so stains stay on the surface
- Repairable — scratches and minor damage can be sanded out
- Warm to the touch compared with stone
Drawbacks
- Scratches easily from knives and utensils
- Poor heat resistance — hot pans and hair tools can scorch or crack it
- Less luxurious look than natural stone or quartz
- Can dull over time in high-use areas
How It Compares
| Material | Heat | Scratch | Look | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solid surface | Poor | Low | Uniform | Mid |
| Quartz | Moderate | High | Consistent | Mid–premium |
| Granite | Excellent | High | Natural | Economical–premium |

Local granite is often cheaper and more durable, while quartz offers better scratch resistance at a similar price.
