Things You Will Need
- Kitchen and bathroom grade silicone sealant (stone-safe, non-staining)
- A caulking gun
- Masking tape
- Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth
- A utility knife or caulk remover
- A caulk smoothing tool, or a wet fingertip
- Paper towels

Step 1: Remove Old Caulk
Cut and scrape away old, cracked or mouldy caulk with a utility knife or caulk remover. Be careful not to scratch the stone.
Step 2: Clean the Joint
Wipe the joint with isopropyl alcohol to remove grease, soap and old residue. Let it dry completely. Caulk will not bond to a dirty or damp surface.
Step 3: Tape the Edges
Apply masking tape along the counter and the backsplash, leaving a narrow gap โ about 3โ5 mm โ centred on the joint. This creates clean, straight lines.
Step 4: Prepare the Tube
Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle with a small opening. Load it into the caulking gun.
Step 5: Apply the Bead
Hold the gun at a 45-degree angle and run a steady, continuous bead along the joint. Move at an even pace and keep steady pressure.
Step 6: Smooth It
Run a wet fingertip or smoothing tool along the bead to press it into the joint and create a neat concave finish. Wipe excess on a paper towel.
Step 7: Remove the Tape
Pull the tape off immediately, before the caulk skins over, pulling away from the joint at an angle.
Step 8: Let It Cure
Avoid water for at least 24 hours, or as directed on the tube.
How Often Should You Recaulk?
Every one to two years in kitchens, or whenever the caulk cracks, peels, discolours or turns black with mould.
What Is Caulk?
Caulk is a flexible sealant that fills joints between surfaces that may move slightly, such as countertops and walls.
Caulk vs Grout
Grout is rigid and fills the gaps between tiles. Caulk is flexible and is used where two different surfaces meet โ counter to wall, sink to counter, tub to tile. Never use grout where a counter meets a wall; it will crack.
Caulk Colours
Clear, white, grey, beige and black are common. Match the caulk to the stone or the grout for a seamless look.
Types of Caulk
Silicone โ best for wet areas, flexible and durable. Acrylic โ paintable, for dry areas. Hybrid โ combines features of both.
