How to Remove a Countertop: The Step-by-Step Process

Removing an old countertop is the first step in many kitchen renovations. Done carefully, it protects your cabinets, walls and plumbing — and even allows you to reuse the old stone elsewhere. Here is the step-by-step process.

Before You Remove the Countertop

Remove All Items

Step 2: Cutting adhesive with knife

Clear the counter completely and empty the cabinets beneath it.

Disconnect All Lines

Turn off water supply valves under the sink and the gas supply to the hob. If you are unsure, call a plumber or gas fitter — safety comes first.

Relocate Your Appliances

Move the fridge, oven, microwave and any freestanding appliances out of the way.

Turn Off Electricity

Switch off power to sockets and built-in appliances near the counter.

Take Out the Sink and Taps

Disconnect the drain and supply pipes. For top-mount sinks, cut the silicone and lift the sink out. For undermount sinks, remove clips and cut adhesive carefully — the sink may drop once released.

Remove the Hob

Disconnect and lift out the built-in hob.

Removing the Countertop

Cut the Caulk

Use a utility knife to cut the silicone along the backsplash and walls.

Remove the Backsplash

If the backsplash is a separate strip, gently pry it off with a putty knife and flat bar, protecting the wall with a wooden block.

Loosen the Adhesive

Slide a thin putty knife or oscillating tool between the countertop and cabinet frame to break the adhesive dabs.

Separate Seams

If the counter has seams, heat or cut through the epoxy to separate sections.

Lift Carefully

Stone counters are heavy. Use at least two or three people, lift straight up and carry pieces vertically (on edge), not flat, to reduce the risk of snapping.

Stone Set in Mortar

In many older Pakistani kitchens, granite or marble is set in cement mortar on masonry counters. This requires careful chiselling and is best done by professionals to avoid damaging the masonry.

After Removal

  • Inspect cabinets and masonry for damage, moisture or termites
  • Repair and level before the new countertop arrives
  • Clean away old adhesive

Safety Tips

Wear gloves, safety glasses and closed shoes. Never lift heavy stone alone.
