Installation Order: Countertops First
In almost every case, countertops are installed before the backsplash. Here is why:
- The backsplash sits on the countertop. Tiles or stone backsplash need the counter in place to rest on and align with.
- Accurate templating. Countertops are templated against bare walls; tiles would interfere with measurements.
- Protecting the backsplash. Heavy stone installation could damage newly installed tiles.
- Clean joint. The joint between counter and backsplash is sealed with flexible caulk after both are installed.
The exception is a stone backsplash cut from the same slab, which is usually installed at the same time as the countertop.
Design Selection: Usually Countertops First
Kitchen Countertops First

Most designers recommend choosing the countertop first because:
- Stone choices are more limited than tile or paint colours.
- Natural stone varies, so it is easier to match tiles to a slab than to find a slab to match tiles.
- The countertop is a bigger investment and harder to change.
- It sets the colour palette for the rest of the kitchen.
Backsplash First
Choose the backsplash first if:
- You have fallen in love with a specific tile — hand-painted, patterned or heritage tiles.
- The backsplash is the intended focal point.
In this case, choose a calmer countertop that complements it — plain white quartz, black granite or a soft grey.
Practical Tips
- Bring your chosen slab sample when shopping for tiles.
- Pick an accent colour from the stone for the backsplash.
- Balance pattern: busy stone with a simple backsplash, or vice versa.
- Decide backsplash height before countertop templating.
