Basic Sink Anatomy
Basin. The bowl where water collects. Sinks have one, two or more basins.
Rim. The edge of the sink, which either sits on top of the counter (top-mount) or beneath it (undermount).
Drains. The outlet at the bottom of each basin, usually with a strainer basket.
Drainboard. An optional ribbed area beside the basin for drying dishes.
Tap holes. Pre-drilled holes for taps, soap dispensers and sprayers.
Key Considerations
Size

Measure your base cabinet. The sink must fit inside it with room for clips and plumbing. Pakistani families cooking in large pots often prefer bigger basins.
Shape
- Single bowl: best for large pots, tawas and degchis.
- Double bowl: separate washing and rinsing, or meat and vegetables.
- Bowl with drainboard: convenient for drying.
- Corner sinks: use awkward corner space.
Depth
Deeper basins (8–10 inches) reduce splashing and hold large pots.
Material
- Stainless steel: durable, affordable, hygienic; can be noisy and show water spots.
- Composite granite: stone-like look, quiet, scratch-resistant; heavier.
- Ceramic/fireclay: classic look; can chip.
- Stone (carved): luxurious; heavy and premium.
Mounting Style
- Undermount: seamless and modern; needs a polished cut-out.
- Top-mount (drop-in): easier and cheaper to install.
- Farmhouse (apron-front): a front panel is exposed; a statement look.
Taps and Accessories
Pull-down sprayers, filtered water taps and soap dispensers all need planning.
