Developing a Plan: What Is the Purpose of Your Island?
Decide what your island will do:

- Prep station โ extra workspace for chopping and kneading
- Cooking โ with a hob and extractor
- Cleaning โ with a sink or dishwasher
- Dining and seating โ breakfast, homework and casual meals
- Storage โ drawers and cabinets
- Entertaining โ serving and socialising
The purpose determines the size, plumbing, electrical and materials.
How to Determine the Size
- Clearance: at least 36โ42 inches (900โ1050 mm) on all sides; more if two cooks work together.
- Length: large islands are typically 8โ10 feet or more.
- Depth: 36โ48 inches, depending on seating and storage.
- Seating: about 24 inches per person, with a 10โ12 inch overhang.

Draw the island on the floor with tape and walk around it before committing.
What If Your Kitchen Can't Fit an Island?
- A peninsula attached to existing counters
- A narrow island or rolling cart
- A breakfast bar along a wall or window
What Materials Can You Use?
- Quartz โ ideal for seating and prep; non-porous.
- Granite โ best if the island includes a hob.
- Marble โ beautiful for baking islands.
- Porcelain โ heat-resistant, large-format.
- Wood โ warm accents for seating extensions.
Large islands may exceed slab length; plan seam positions or choose jumbo slabs.
Common Kitchen Island Mistakes
Ignoring the Work Triangle
An island should not block the path between sink, stove and fridge.
Forgetting Sinks and Appliances
Plan plumbing and electrical early โ retrofitting is costly.
Too Large for the Space
Narrow walkways make the kitchen frustrating to use.
No Seating Comfort
Insufficient overhang leaves no knee space.
Poor Lighting
Pendants are essential over large islands.
No Sockets
Plan pop-up or side sockets.
