How Do You Know if an Island Will Fit?
You need enough space to walk and work around it. Allow at least 36–42 inches (900–1050 mm) of clearance on every side, and more if two people cook together or if appliance doors open towards the island. A kitchen narrower than about 12–13 feet may suit a peninsula better.
Why Have a Kitchen Island?
- Extra workspace for chopping, kneading and plating
- Additional storage in drawers and cabinets
- Seating for breakfast and casual meals
- A social hub where family and guests can gather
- A design focal point
- Space for a sink or hob if plumbing allows

Island Sizes
- Minimum: about 4 × 2 feet.
- Comfortable: 6–8 feet long and 3–4 feet deep.
- Seating: about 24 inches per person, with a 10–12 inch overhang.

What Materials Can You Use?

Tough and heat-resistant — ideal if your island has a hob. Exotic granites like Brown Wave or Blue Pearl make striking statements.

Natural, hard and marble-like; premium.
Quartz
Non-porous and easy to clean — excellent for seating areas, homework and breakfast.
Wood (Butcher Block)
Warm and inviting, often used as a breakfast-bar extension.
