What You Should Never Use on Granite
- Vinegar, lemon and other acids — they weaken the sealer.
- Bleach and ammonia — they can dull the surface and break down the sealer.
- Abrasive powders, steel wool and scouring pads — they scratch the polish.
- Bathroom descalers and toilet cleaners — highly acidic and damaging.
- Oven cleaners and strong degreasers — highly alkaline.
- Furniture polish and wax sprays — they leave a cloudy film.
What You Should Use
- Warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap
- Microfibre cloths and soft sponges
- A pH-neutral stone cleaner for weekly cleaning
- Isopropyl alcohol (diluted 1:1) for disinfecting
- Baking soda for poultices

How to Clean Granite Daily
- Wipe away crumbs and loose debris.
- Clean with warm soapy water in circular motions.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth to remove soap film.
- Dry and buff with a microfibre towel.
Weekly Cleaning
Spray a pH-neutral granite cleaner across the counter, leave it for a minute and wipe. Pay attention to the cooking area, where oil mist builds up.
How to Remove Stains from Granite
- Oil and grease: baking soda and water poultice, left 24–48 hours under plastic wrap.
- Organic stains (tea, coffee, haldi): baking soda with hydrogen peroxide poultice.
- Rust: a stone-safe rust remover.
- Water marks: let them dry; most disappear.
- Ink: isopropyl alcohol or acetone on dark granite.
How to Seal Granite
- Clean the counter and let it dry for 24 hours.
- Apply a penetrating granite sealer evenly.
- Let it soak in for the time on the label.
- Wipe off all excess.
- Allow 24–48 hours to cure.
How to Know When Granite Needs Resealing
Do the water-drop test: place a few drops of water on the counter and wait 10–15 minutes. If the stone darkens, it is absorbing water and needs resealing. Light granites typically need sealing once a year; dark granites less often.
