How to Make Granite Shine: Practical Steps

Polished granite should have a deep, mirror-like gloss. If your counter looks dull, it is usually a sign of residue or worn sealer rather than permanent damage. Here are practical steps to restore and maintain that shine.

How Does Granite Shine?

At the factory, granite slabs are ground and then polished with progressively finer diamond abrasives. This creates flat, reflective crystal faces across the surface. The shine is part of the stone itself — not a coating — which is why granite keeps its gloss for decades with proper care.

What Makes Granite Look Dull?

  • Soap film and cleaner residue
  • Cooking grease and oil mist
  • Hard-water mineral deposits
  • Hazy, unevenly applied sealer
  • Acidic cleaners that weaken the sealer
  • Fine scratches from grit and abrasive pads

Retaining the Shine

  1. Clean daily with warm water and a little mild dish soap.
  2. Rinse with clean water to remove soap residue.
  3. Dry and buff with a microfibre cloth — the single most effective step.
  4. Avoid acids such as vinegar and lemon.
  5. Avoid abrasives such as scouring powder and steel wool.

Enhancing the Shine

A granite polish product, applied occasionally, adds extra gloss and a light protective layer. Spray it on, buff with a dry cloth and enjoy the reflection. Choose products designed specifically for natural stone.

Removing Sealer Haze

If sealer was applied too heavily and left to dry, it can leave a cloudy film. Apply a small amount of fresh sealer to re-liquefy the haze, then wipe it off immediately and buff dry.

Cleaning Granite Surfaces

  • Daily: soapy water, rinse, dry.
  • Weekly: a pH-neutral granite cleaner.
  • As needed: isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting and streak-free shine.

Other Ways to Keep Granite in Great Shape

  • Use trivets for very hot pans.
  • Use cutting boards.
  • Wipe spills promptly, especially oil and chai.
  • Do not sit or stand on counters.

Sealing Granite

Light granites need sealing roughly once a year; dark granites less often. Sealing does not add shine, but it protects the stone from stains that can dull its appearance.

Professional Re-Polishing

If your granite remains dull after thorough cleaning, professional re-polishing with diamond pads can restore its original gloss. FB Marble provides this service in Lahore.
