Basics of Slate
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic stone traditionally used for roofs, floors, fireplace hearths and some counters. It is usually charcoal, black or grey, with occasional green or purple tones.

How Slate Forms
Slate begins as clay and fine sediment that settle in layers. Over millions of years, pressure and moderate heat transform them into shale and then slate. This layered origin gives slate its ability to split into thin sheets.
Slate Quality
Higher-quality slate is dense, consistent in colour and resistant to flaking. Lower-quality slate can shed thin layers, especially at edges and in high-traffic areas.
Why Does Slate Have Pores?
The microscopic spaces between mineral layers allow some absorption. Good slate has low absorption, but oil and grease can still darken it if left.
Cleaning Materials
- Soft microfibre cloths
- pH-neutral soap or stone cleaner
- Warm water
- A soft brush for textured (cleft) surfaces
- Optional: mineral oil or an enhancing sealer
Routine Cleaning
- Dust first. Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and grit — important during Pakistan's dusty months.
- Wash. Wipe with warm water and a little pH-neutral soap.
- Rinse. Use a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue.
- Dry. Buff dry to avoid water marks.

For cleft (textured) slate, use a soft brush to reach into the natural ridges.
Weekly and Occasional Care
- Clean the area around the stove more thoroughly to remove grease.
- Check for any flaking edges.
- Apply an enhancing sealer every year or two, or a thin coat of mineral oil if you like a deeper, richer colour.
Removing Common Marks
- Oil: baking soda poultice.
- Water marks: dry thoroughly; most disappear.
- Light scratches: mineral oil or very fine steel wool.
What to Avoid
Harsh acids, bleach, abrasive powders and heavy-duty degreasers can strip sealers and dull the surface.
