What Is Slate Made Of?
Slate is a metamorphic rock formed when clay and volcanic ash were compressed and heated over millions of years. This creates a fine-grained stone that splits into thin layers and has a soft, smooth texture with a natural matte appearance.
Is Slate Porous?
Good-quality slate is fairly dense and has low water absorption, which is why it has been used for roofs for centuries. However, some softer varieties absorb oil, and the surface texture can hold residue. Sealing with an enhancing sealer protects the stone and deepens its colour.
Can Slate Handle Staining?
Slate resists acids much better than marble, so lemon and vinegar will not etch it. Oil and grease, however, can darken it. Slate is softer than granite, so light scratches are more common — but these can often be hidden by rubbing in a little mineral oil.
How to Clean Slate Daily
Method 1: Microfibre only. For dust, crumbs and light marks, a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth is enough. Matte stone collects dust visibly, especially in Pakistan's dry season, so a quick wipe makes a big difference.

Method 2: Mild soap and warm water. Wipe with soapy water, rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry with a towel. Avoid leaving water to evaporate on the surface, which can leave mineral spots.
Removing Stains
- Oil and grease: a baking soda poultice left under plastic wrap for 24 hours.
- Water marks: dry the area thoroughly; most marks fade. Apply an enhancing sealer to even out the colour.
- Scratches: rub gently with very fine steel wool along the grain, or apply mineral oil to darken light scratches.
- Rust: a stone-safe rust remover.
Caring for Leather-Finish Granite
Leathered black granite — a popular alternative to slate — is cleaned the same way. Its textured surface can hold oil in the low points, so use a soft brush with soapy water occasionally and rinse well. Seal it regularly because textured finishes can be slightly more absorbent than polished ones.

Choosing a More Durable Alternative
If you love the dark matte look but want maximum durability, FB Marble recommends leather-finish Galaxy Black, Black Pearl or Impala Black granite, or a matte dark quartz. All three hide fingerprints well and resist scratches better than slate.
