Cutting granite requires the right tools, patience and strict safety precautions. For small DIY tasks — trimming a tile or a threshold — it can be done at home. For countertops, professional fabrication is strongly recommended. Here is what you need to know.

Step 2: Safety gear – how to cut granite
Step 2: Safety gear

A wet or dry circular saw or angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade designed for granite. Wet saws are preferred because water cools the blade and reduces dust.

Safety Goggles

Protect your eyes from chips and dust.

Dust Mask or Respirator

Granite dust contains silica, which is harmful to breathe. Use a proper respirator and cut wet whenever possible.

Ear Plugs

Stone cutting is very loud.

Gloves

Protect your hands from sharp edges.

Ruler or Tape Measure

For accurate measurements.

Painter's Tape

Reduces chipping and provides a visible cut line.

Clamps and Supports

To hold the granite steady and support both sides of the cut.

Water Supply

For wet cutting.

Step-by-Step: How to Cut Granite

Step 1: Measure and Mark

Measure carefully, apply painter's tape along the cut line and mark it clearly.

Step 2: Support the Granite

Place the granite on a flat, stable surface with support on both sides of the cut so the offcut does not snap and chip the edge.

Step 3: Set Up Water

Connect water to the saw or have a helper spray water on the blade.

Step 4: Score the Line

Make a shallow first pass along the line to guide the blade.

Step 5: Cut Gradually

Make several passes, increasing depth each time. Do not force the saw — let the diamond blade do the work.

Step 6: Finish the Cut

Slow down near the end to prevent breakage.

Step 7: Smooth the Edge

Use diamond hand pads from coarse to fine grit to smooth and polish the cut edge.

Safety First

  • Always cut outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
  • Prefer wet cutting to suppress dust
  • Keep hands away from the blade
  • Disconnect power when changing blades

When to Use Professionals

Countertops, sink and hob cut-outs, mitered edges and large slabs require bridge saws, CNC machines and experienced fabricators. FB Marble cuts all countertops in our workshop with precision equipment.
