What Is Suede (Leathered) Granite?

Suede granite — also called leathered or brushed granite — has a soft, subtly textured surface that feels a little like suede or leather to the touch. It is one of the most popular modern finishes for dark granite counters in Pakistani kitchens. Here is what it is and why people love it.

What Are Granite Finishes?

A finish is the surface treatment applied to a granite slab after cutting. The same stone can look glossy, matte, textured or rough depending on the finish. Common finishes include polished, honed, leathered (suede), flamed and sandblasted.

What Is Suede Granite?

Suede granite has a soft sheen rather than a mirror shine, with gentle undulations that you can feel with your fingertips. The colour remains deep and rich — unlike honed granite, which can look lighter.

How Does Granite Get a Suede Finish?

The slab is first honed smooth. It is then brushed with rotating diamond-tipped or abrasive brushes. These remove some of the softer minerals in the stone while leaving the harder crystals slightly raised. The result is a subtle, natural texture with a satin sheen.

How It Compares with Other Finishes

Polished: high gloss, deepest colour, very smooth. Shows fingerprints and water spots on dark stones.

Honed: flat matte finish; colours appear lighter; can show oil marks.

Caressed: a smoother version of leathered — slight texture with a satin sheen.

Suede/Leathered: soft texture, deep colour, excellent at hiding marks.

Benefits of Suede Granite

  • Hides fingerprints and water spots — ideal for black granite.
  • Non-reflective, modern look that suits contemporary kitchens.
  • Better grip on floors and stairs than polished.
  • Natural, tactile feel that adds warmth.
  • Disguises minor scratches and wear.

Best Stones for Suede

Dark granites like Black Pearl, Galaxy Black, Impala Black and Titanium Black look stunning in suede. Brown granites like Tan Brown also take this finish beautifully.

Caring for Suede Granite

Textured finishes can hold oil and crumbs in the low points. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush when needed, rinse well and dry. Seal regularly — textured surfaces can be slightly more absorbent than polished ones.
