Selecting the Right Countertop Thickness for Marble or Granite

Thickness is one of the first technical choices you make when ordering stone counters, and it affects strength, weight, appearance and cost. The two most common options in Pakistan are 2 cm (18–20 mm) and 3 cm (30 mm). Here is how to choose between them — and when to consider something thinner or thicker.

2 cm Countertops

Two-centimetre slabs are the standard choice for kitchens and vanities that sit fully on cabinets or masonry counters. They are lighter, easier to carry up stairs, quicker to install and more economical. With a built-up (laminated) or mitered edge, a 2 cm counter can look as thick as a 4–6 cm slab at the front.

Best for: kitchen counters on full support, vanities, window sills, wall cladding and floors.

3 cm Countertops

Three-centimetre slabs are stiffer and stronger over spans and overhangs. They look substantial and allow deeper edge profiles without lamination. They are also heavier, so cabinets must be strong, and they cost more per square foot.

Best for: stair treads, thresholds, statement islands, bar tops and outdoor counters.

Thinner than 2 cm

Slabs of 10–15 mm are used for wall cladding, backsplashes and shower walls. They must be fully bonded to a wall or supported by plywood. They are not suitable for unsupported counters or overhangs.

Thicker than 3 cm

Custom thicknesses of 4 cm and above are used for solid table tops, outdoor benches, steps and carved pieces. They are very heavy and expensive, and usually specified only for special design features.

Does Marble Need to Be Thicker than Granite?

Marble is softer than granite and slightly more prone to cracking around sink cut-outs and narrow sections. However, for most vanities and counters, 18–20 mm marble on a solid base is perfectly adequate. What matters more is good support — add plywood or steel supports for long spans, overhangs and areas above dishwashers or washing machines.

Weight Considerations

As a rough guide, granite at 2 cm weighs around 12–15 kg per square foot, and 3 cm roughly 50% more. On upper floors and in older buildings, lighter slabs are easier and safer to install.

Cost Considerations

Thicker stone costs more to buy, transport and install. A built-up edge on a 2 cm slab usually gives the thick look for less money than a full 3 cm slab.

Quick Recommendations

  • Kitchen counter on full support: 18–20 mm
  • Island with overhang: 20 mm with brackets, or 30 mm
  • Vanity: 18–20 mm
  • Stairs: 30 mm treads
  • Walls: 10–18 mm
