How to Cut Marble: Steps to Achieving the Right Cut

Cutting marble requires the right tools, patience and care. Marble is softer than granite but brittle, and a careless cut can chip edges or crack the piece. For small DIY jobs like tiles and thresholds, here is how to achieve a clean cut. For countertops and large slabs, professional fabrication is always recommended.

What You Need Before You Cut

Get a Wet Saw

A wet tile saw with a diamond blade designed for stone is essential. Water cools the blade and suppresses dust. Angle grinders with diamond blades can be used for small cuts, but they are harder to control.

Follow the Instructions

Read the saw's manual, check the blade is suitable for marble and ensure safety guards are in place.

Connect the Saw to a Water Supply

Fill the reservoir or connect a continuous water feed. Never cut stone dry indoors — the dust is harmful to breathe.

Wear Safety Gear

Safety glasses, a dust mask, ear protection and gloves.

Support the Marble

Place the marble on a stable, flat surface or the saw table. For larger pieces, support both sides so the offcut does not snap off and chip the edge.

Mark Your Cut

Apply painter's tape along the cut line and mark it with a pencil. The tape also helps reduce chipping.

Check the Blade

Make sure the blade is sharp and clean. A dull blade causes chipping.

Making the Cut

  1. Turn on the water and saw, and let the blade reach full speed.
  2. Feed the marble slowly and steadily into the blade — do not force it.
  3. Keep the marble flat and aligned with the guide.
  4. Slow down near the end of the cut to avoid breaking the last section.
  5. For thick marble, make several shallow passes.

Finishing the Edges

After cutting, smooth the edge with diamond hand pads, working from coarse to fine grit. Polish with marble polishing powder for a glossy finish, or leave it honed for a matte edge.

Safety Tips

  • Never cut marble dry indoors
  • Keep hands well away from the blade
  • Unplug the saw when changing blades
  • Work in a well-ventilated area
