Stone Countertop Thickness Explained: 18 mm, 20 mm or 30 mm?

Thickness is one of the technical choices people often overlook when ordering stone, yet it affects strength, appearance, weight, installation and cost. Whether you are considering slate, granite, marble or quartz, the principles are similar. Here is how to choose the right thickness for each part of your home.

Why Thickness Matters

Thicker slabs resist breaking over unsupported spans and overhangs, look more substantial and allow more decorative edge profiles. Thinner slabs are lighter, more economical and easier to install on walls, vanities and upper floors. The right answer depends on where the stone will go and how it will be supported.

Common Thickness Options

Around 10โ€“13 mm. Used for wall cladding, backsplashes, shower walls and some slate or porcelain products. These must be fully supported or bonded to a wall.

18 mm. FB Marble's standard thickness for quartz and a very common thickness for granite and marble counters that sit fully on cabinets or masonry.

20 mm. Slightly stronger and stiffer. We recommend it for islands, long runs with sink and hob cut-outs, and breakfast-bar overhangs.

30 mm. Used for stairs, door thresholds, heavy-duty counters and statement islands. It gives a chunky edge without a built-up strip.

Thin Stone: Pros and Cons

Pros: lighter, cheaper, ideal for walls and vanities, easier to carry to upper floors.

Cons: needs solid plywood or masonry support, more fragile around cut-outs, limited edge choices.

Thick Stone: Pros and Cons

Pros: strong over spans, premium appearance, supports overhangs, more edge options.

Cons: heavier, costlier, requires strong cabinets and more labour to install.

A Note on Slate

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic stone with a natural matte, dark appearance. It is softer than granite and is usually installed in thinner slabs with full support beneath. Slate is less common in Pakistani supply. For a similar matte dark look with greater hardness, FB Marble recommends a leather-finish black granite such as Galaxy Black or Black Pearl.

How to Get a Thick Look Without the Weight

A built-up (laminated) edge glues a strip of stone under the front edge, doubling the visible thickness. A mitered edge achieves the same effect with an almost invisible joint. Both let an 18โ€“20 mm slab look like 40 mm or more.

Quick Recommendations

  • Fully supported kitchen counter: 18โ€“20 mm
  • Island with seating overhang: 20 mm with brackets, or 30 mm
  • Bathroom vanity: 18โ€“20 mm
  • Stair treads: 30 mm; risers 18โ€“20 mm
  • Wall cladding: 10โ€“18 mm
