What Is a Mitered Edge Countertop? The Thick-Slab Look Explained

If you have seen a kitchen island that looks like it is carved from one massive block of stone, you were probably looking at a mitered edge. It is one of the most popular premium edge styles for modern Pakistani kitchens, especially with quartz and marble-look designs.

What Is a Mitered Edge?

A mitered edge is created by cutting the countertop and a separate strip of the same stone at 45-degree angles and joining them. When the two pieces meet, they form a sharp 90-degree corner with an almost invisible joint. The result looks like the counter is 40 mm, 60 mm or even thicker, while the main surface is only 18–20 mm.

Mitered vs Laminated Edge

A laminated (built-up) edge is made by gluing a strip under the front edge so the thickness doubles. The joint line is visible on the face of the edge. A mitered edge hides the joint at the corner, so the pattern continues from the top over the edge. With veined stone, the veins appear to "wrap" around the corner.

Where to Use a Mitered Edge

  • Kitchen islands and breakfast bars
  • Waterfall ends where the stone drops to the floor
  • Bathroom vanities with a floating, chunky look
  • Reception desks and café counters
  • Feature shelves and fireplace hearths

Choosing the Right Stone

Mitered edges look best on materials with consistent colour or controlled veining, such as quartz (Calacatta Gold, Carrara White, Ice White) or porcelain slabs. Natural stones with strong, random movement can also be mitered, but the fabricator must select the strip carefully so the pattern flows.

What Affects the Cost?

Size. Longer edges and deeper drops require more material and more joints.

Stone material. Harder materials and patterned slabs that need vein matching take more time.

Precise cutting. Mitering requires accurate 45-degree cuts, colour-matched epoxy and careful polishing. It is labour-intensive and is priced per running foot on top of the base slab.

Pros and Cons

Pros: luxurious thick look, seamless vein flow, modern clean lines, lighter than a true thick slab.

Cons: higher cost, sharper corner (we often soften it slightly), needs skilled fabrication.

How FB Marble Fabricates Mitered Edges

Our team cuts the mitre with a bridge saw for accuracy, bonds the pieces with colour-matched adhesive and clamps them until cured. The corner is then polished and slightly eased for safety. We show you a sample edge before production.
