What Is a Double Radius (Full Round) Countertop Edge?

Edges are a small detail that change the whole personality of a countertop. The double radius edge — also called a quarter round top and bottom — gives a smooth, softened profile that is both elegant and practical. It is a favourite for families with young children and for classic kitchen designs.

What Is the Double Radius Edge?

The edge is shaped so that both the top corner and the bottom corner are rounded with a small radius, usually a few millimetres. The front face between them stays flat. From the side it looks like a gently pillowed edge.

Different Names, Same Edge

Fabricators may call it a double radius, quarter round top and bottom, double eased or softened square edge. If you are not sure, ask to see a physical sample at the showroom.

Companion Styles

The double radius sits between a sharp square edge and a fully rounded bullnose. It pairs well with:

  • Undermount sinks, whose cut-outs can be finished with the same radius
  • Matching window sills and vanity tops for a consistent look
  • Simple shaker or flat-panel cabinets

What Type of Edge Is It?

It is considered a standard edge, meaning it is usually included in the base fabrication price or costs very little extra. Premium edges such as ogee, mitered and waterfall cost more.

Pros of the Double Radius Edge

  • Safe. No sharp corners at child height, which matters in busy households.
  • Chip-resistant. Rounded corners distribute impacts better than sharp ones.
  • Easy to clean. Spills wipe off smoothly without catching in grooves.
  • Versatile. Works with granite, marble, quartz and porcelain.
  • Comfortable. Leaning on the counter feels softer.

Cons of the Double Radius Edge

  • Less dramatic. It is subtle; if you want a thick, bold look, a mitered edge is better.
  • Slightly casual. Very formal designs may suit an ogee or bevel better.

Where It Works Best

Family kitchens, bathroom vanities, study tables, laundry counters and stairs where a soft nosing is safer underfoot.

FB Marble Tip

When choosing the edge for granite or quartz, look at how it affects the visible thickness. A double radius makes an 18 mm slab look clean and neat without adding cost. Visit our granite edges page on fbmarble.com to compare profiles.

Frequently asked questions

No, a half bullnose rounds only the top fully; the double radius rounds both corners lightly.

Can it be done on stairs?

Yes, it makes a safe and attractive step nosing.

Does it cost extra?

Usually not; it is treated as a standard edge.
