What Is a Bullnose Edge? Full, Half and Other Rounded Styles

The bullnose is one of the oldest and most familiar edge profiles in Pakistani homes. You will find it on marble staircases, kitchen counters, window sills and boundary-wall caps across the country. Its rounded shape is safe, comfortable to lean on and timeless, which is why it remains one of the most requested edges at FB Marble.

What Is a Bullnose Edge?

A bullnose is a rounded edge that curves smoothly from the top surface over the front face of the slab. The name comes from its resemblance to the rounded nose of a bull. Instead of a corner, you feel a smooth curve.

Is It a Standard Edge?

Most bullnose styles are considered standard edges and are included in the base fabrication price or cost very little extra. Only the more decorative cove and double bullnose versions sometimes carry a small premium.

Styles of Bullnose Edging

Full bullnose. Both the top and bottom are rounded, forming a complete semicircle. It is very soft and traditional, but water spilled on the counter can run around the curve and drip under the edge onto cabinet doors.

Step 1: Full vs half bullnose profiles

Half bullnose. Only the top is rounded; the bottom remains flat and square. This is the most practical kitchen version, because spills stop at the edge rather than running underneath.

Demi bullnose. A smaller, flatter curve on the top corner. It gives a subtle, modern softness.

Double bullnose. Used on built-up (laminated) edges, it creates two stacked rounded profiles for a thicker, more substantial look.

Cove bullnose. A concave cove on top that flows into a convex round — decorative and well suited to classic kitchens.

Where to Use It

  • Stairs: bullnose nosing is the standard choice for marble and granite steps in Pakistan because it is safe underfoot.
  • Family kitchens: no sharp corners at a child's eye level.
  • Window sills and parapets: rain runs off cleanly.
  • Bathroom vanities: comfortable and easy to wipe.
  • Outdoor counters and wall caps: durable and safe.

Grey Emperador Marble from our stock in Lahore. Ideal for: bullnose stair nosing in marble.

Pros

  • Safe for children and elderly family members
  • More resistant to chipping than sharp edges
  • Easy to clean with no grooves
  • A classic look that suits traditional houses and kothis

Cons

  • Less contemporary than an eased or mitered edge
  • A full bullnose can let water drip under the counter
  • Makes thin slabs look thinner, rather than thicker

Choosing the Right Bullnose

For kitchens we usually recommend half bullnose. For stairs, a full or half bullnose with an anti-slip groove works well. For formal lounges or classic bathrooms, a cove bullnose adds detail without much extra cost.
