What Is Granite?
Granite is a hard, natural igneous stone formed from slowly cooled magma, prized for durability and heat resistance.
What Is Leathered Granite?
Leathered granite has a textured surface with a soft sheen, slightly undulating to the touch — similar to leather. The colour stays deep and rich, unlike honed granite, which looks lighter.
Other Finish Options
Honed Granite
Smooth and matte; colours look lighter; can show oil marks.
Polished Granite
High gloss; deepest colour; best stain resistance; shows fingerprints on dark stones.
Flamed Granite
Rough and slip-resistant; used outdoors.
How Is Granite Leathered?
After the slab is honed, rotating diamond-tipped brushes pass over the surface. They remove softer minerals slightly, leaving harder crystals raised. The result is a gentle, natural texture that follows the stone's crystal structure.

Benefits of Leathered Granite
- Hides fingerprints, smudges and water spots — ideal for black granite
- Rich colour retained
- Modern, natural look
- Disguises minor scratches
- Better grip on stairs and floors than polished

Best Granites for Leathering
Galaxy Black, Black Pearl, Impala Black, Titanium Black and Tan Brown look particularly beautiful leathered.
How to Care for Leathered Granite Countertops
Daily: wipe with warm soapy water and dry.
Weekly: use a soft brush with soapy water to clean the textured low points, then rinse.
Sealing: textured finishes can be slightly more absorbent; seal regularly, especially lighter leathered stones. Enhancing sealers can deepen the colour.
Avoid: vinegar, bleach, abrasive powders and oily products that collect in the texture.
Is Leathered Granite Right for You?
If you want a black kitchen counter that does not show every fingerprint and water mark, leathered granite is an excellent choice.
