Granite Adhesive: What It Is and How It's Used

Adhesives are a small but critical part of every granite installation. They bond seams, fix slabs to cabinets, attach built-up edges and repair chips. Using the right adhesive in the right place makes the difference between a counter that lasts decades and one that develops gaps and cracks.

What Is Granite Adhesive?

Granite adhesive is a bonding material designed for natural stone. It must be strong, durable and — in visible joints — colour-matchable so that seams blend into the stone.

Main Types of Stone Adhesive

Epoxy

Types of stone adhesive.

A two-part adhesive (resin and hardener) that cures into an extremely strong, durable bond. It can be tinted to match the stone and polished flush. Used for seams, mitered edges, built-up edges and chip repairs.

Polyester (Knife-Grade) Adhesive

Fast-setting and easy to colour. Commonly used for seams and quick repairs; less flexible and less UV-resistant than epoxy.

Silicone

A flexible sealant used where the stone meets walls, sinks and backsplashes. It allows slight movement and keeps water out. Use stone-safe, non-staining silicone.

Construction Adhesives

Used in some installations to bond slabs to cabinet frames or supports.

How Is Granite Adhesive Used?

Seams. Two slab edges are cleaned, filled with colour-matched epoxy or polyester, pulled tight with seam setters and levelled. Once cured, the excess is scraped and polished.

Fixing to cabinets. Small dabs of adhesive or silicone hold the slab in place on the cabinets without making removal impossible later.

Built-up and mitered edges. Strips are bonded to the main slab with epoxy and clamped until cured.

Undermount sinks. Sinks are bonded and supported beneath the counter with epoxy and mechanical clips.

Repairs. Chips and small cracks are filled with tinted epoxy.

Why Colour Matching Matters

A seam filled with the wrong colour stands out. Professional fabricators mix pigments into the adhesive to match the dominant colour of the stone, making seams far less visible.

DIY Tips

  • Use adhesives designed for natural stone
  • Clean and dry surfaces thoroughly
  • Follow mixing ratios exactly
  • Work quickly — many adhesives set fast
  • Use masking tape to protect surrounding surfaces
