Pakistani Green Onyx: Uses, Backlit Walls and How to Care for It

Green onyx is one of Pakistan's most distinctive stones. Light passes through it, so a backlit onyx wall glows like nothing else. It is also soft, so it needs the right place and the right care.

Pakistan is known worldwide for its green onyx, mostly quarried in Balochistan. The stone has bands of pale lime, deep green and honey tones, and thin slabs are translucent. That is why designers use it for glowing feature walls, bar fronts, reception desks and vanity tops.

Onyx is also soft, so it needs the right place and the right care. This guide covers the main types of green onyx, how a backlit wall works, where onyx belongs and where it does not, and a step-by-step plan for a backlit feature in your home.

Types of green onyx

  • Light Green Onyx: pale and highly translucent, the best choice for backlighting. Estimated Rs 2,700 โ€“ 2,900 per sq ft.
  • Dark Green Onyx: deeper colour, less light passes through, rich and dramatic without lighting. About Rs 2,800 โ€“ 3,000.
  • Multi Green Onyx: strong bands of several greens and creams, very decorative. About Rs 3,200 โ€“ 3,400.
  • Pakistan Green Onyx: the classic banded green. About Rs 3,000 โ€“ 3,200.

If the wall will be backlit, start with Light Green Onyx. If it will be lit from the front only, Dark Green or Multi Green Onyx gives more colour and drama on its own.

How a backlit onyx wall works

The onyx is fixed a short distance in front of a light panel, so light passes evenly through the stone. A few practical points make the difference between a patchy glow and an even one:

  • Use an even LED light source, such as LED panels or a dense LED strip grid, not a few bulbs.
  • Leave a gap between the LEDs and the stone so the light spreads evenly; your electrician can test the spacing with a sample piece.
  • Choose lighter slabs, as they glow more. Hold a phone torch behind the sample in the showroom to check.
  • Plan access to the LEDs for future maintenance.
  • Use LEDs that run cool, and choose warm white or neutral white to suit the room.

Cool-running LEDs matter more in Pakistan than in milder climates. A wall cavity in a Lahore summer is already warm, so a light source that adds little heat behind the stone is the sensible choice.

Backlit or plain?

Not every onyx feature needs lighting behind it. A plain, front-lit onyx wall still shows rich bands of green, lime and honey, and Dark Green or Multi Green Onyx looks dramatic without any backlight at all. Backlighting adds cost and planning, because the wall needs a frame, a light source and access for maintenance. It pays off where the stone is the centrepiece of a room and is seen in the evening, such as a lounge TV wall, a reception desk or a bar front. For a vanity top or a smaller accent, a well-sealed plain slab with good front lighting is often enough. If you are unsure, hold a torch behind the sample and decide whether the glow is worth the extra work.

What you need for a backlit onyx feature

  • the wall size in square feet and a sketch of the design
  • Light Green Onyx slabs, or another light onyx you have tested with a torch
  • LED panels or a dense LED strip grid that runs cool
  • a frame that holds the stone a short distance in front of the lights
  • an access panel or removable section for LED maintenance
  • a stone sealer and a pH-neutral cleaner

Planning a backlit wall: step by step

Step 1: Choose the wall

Pick a wall where the glow will be seen and enjoyed: a TV wall in the lounge, the wall behind a reception desk, a bar front or a powder room vanity wall. Avoid spots where furniture will block most of the stone.

Step 2: Test the slabs with light

Hold a phone torch behind each slab or sample. Lighter, thinner areas glow more, and darker bands show as shadows. Choose the slabs whose glow and banding you like most.

Step 3: Plan the lighting with your electrician

Agree on the light source, colour (warm white or neutral white) and the gap between the lights and the stone. Your electrician can test the spacing with a sample piece before the full wall is built.

Step 4: Lay out the slabs

Lay the slabs out flat and arrange the bands so they flow across the joins. Bookmatched layouts, where neighbouring slabs mirror each other, make a strong centrepiece.

Step 5: Build in access

LEDs need replacing eventually. Plan a removable panel or access point so the lights can be reached without taking the stone off the wall.

Step 6: Seal and switch on

Seal the onyx once it is fixed, then test the lighting in the evening, when the glow is strongest.

Best uses

UseSuitable?Notes
Feature or TV wallExcellentBacklit or plain
Powder room vanityGoodSeal well, wipe splashes
Reception and bar frontsExcellentVery striking with backlighting
Kitchen counterNot recommendedToo soft; acids and knives mark it
Busy floorsNot recommendedScratches with grit; use as an inlay instead

A kitchen in a Pakistani home sees lemon, imli, tomato and vinegar every day, along with knives and heavy pots. Onyx would mark quickly under that use, which is why granite or quartz is the better counter. On a floor, a small onyx inlay or medallion set into marble gives the colour without the wear.

Care

Onyx is softer than marble. It scratches more easily and etches with acids. Seal it, use coasters and trays on vanities, and clean only with a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads and any acid-based cleaner. Our sealing guide applies here too.

On a powder room vanity, perfume, hand soap and toothpaste can all mark the stone if left to sit. Keep them on a tray. Where hard water splashes the surface, dry it with a soft cloth so mineral spots do not build up on the polish.

Common mistakes

  • Using dark onyx for backlighting. Less light passes through it, and the glow looks patchy. Use Light Green Onyx.
  • Fixing LEDs too close to the stone. The light shows as bright spots instead of an even glow. Test the spacing first.
  • No access to the lights. Without an access panel, a failed LED can mean removing stone.
  • Onyx on a kitchen counter. Acids and knives mark it. Choose granite or quartz there.
  • Cleaning with acid or abrasive pads. Onyx etches and scratches easily. Use a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner.

Pairing ideas

Green onyx looks especially good next to calm, neutral stones. Try it with a Silky Black or Ziarat White surround, or brass fittings for a classic look. For more bathroom ideas, see bathroom marble ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Pakistani green onyx come from?

Most Pakistani green onyx is quarried in Balochistan. It is exported worldwide for decorative interiors.

Can onyx be used for a kitchen countertop?

We do not recommend it. Onyx is soft and etches with acids, so it is better for walls, vanities, bar fronts and decorative pieces.

Which onyx is best for backlighting?

Light Green Onyx lets the most light through. Hold a torch behind the sample to see how it glows before choosing.

What is the price of green onyx in Pakistan?

In our range, green onyx is estimated at about Rs 2,700 โ€“ 3,400 per sq ft depending on type and grade.

What lights are best behind an onyx wall?

An even LED source, such as LED panels or a dense LED strip grid, that runs cool. Warm white or neutral white suits most rooms.

Can green onyx be used on floors?

Not on busy floors, because grit scratches it. Use onyx as an inlay or medallion within a marble floor instead.
