How Heat and Cold Affect Quartz Countertops

Quartz handles daily kitchen life extremely well, but temperature is one area where a little knowledge prevents expensive damage. Pakistan's climate โ€” scorching summers, cold northern winters and kitchens where food is cooked at high heat โ€” makes this especially relevant.

Quartz Durability

Quartz is hard, dense and non-porous. These properties come from its high natural quartz content. But the resin that binds the quartz together is a polymer, and polymers are sensitive to high heat. Understanding this helps you protect your counter.

Why Quartz Feels Cold

Stone surfaces conduct heat away from your skin quickly, so they feel cool to the touch. In summer this is pleasant; on winter mornings in Islamabad or Murree, quartz can feel chilly. This is normal and has no effect on the material.

Quartz Temperature Limits

Quartz tolerates warm dishes, plates of food and cups of chai without any problem. However, sustained high heat โ€” a karahi, tawa or pressure cooker straight from the flame โ€” can scorch the resin, leaving a yellow or brown mark. Very sudden temperature changes can also cause thermal shock cracks, especially near cut-outs and seams where the slab is narrowest.

What Can Damage Quartz?

  • Hot cookware placed directly on the surface
  • Electric appliances such as griddles, slow cookers and roti makers left running on bare quartz for long periods
  • Strong direct sunlight through windows or on outdoor counters, which can slowly fade or yellow the resin
  • Sudden extremes such as pouring cold water onto a very hot area

Protecting Your Quartz

  • Keep trivets or heat pads beside the stove and use them every time
  • Place heat-producing appliances on wooden boards or heat mats
  • Let pans cool on the stove rather than moving them straight to the counter
  • Use blinds on windows that let strong afternoon sun hit the counter
  • Do not install quartz on open terraces or outdoor kitchens โ€” use granite instead

Cold Weather

Normal indoor cold, even in northern winters, does not harm quartz. Avoid placing very hot items on a very cold counter to reduce thermal shock risk.

If Damage Happens

Light scorch marks can sometimes be reduced by professional polishing. Cracks need assessment. Contact FB Marble if you notice any damage.
