What Is Honed Marble? What It Is and How to Care for It

Honed marble has a soft, matte finish instead of the high gloss of polished marble. It is increasingly popular in kitchens, bathrooms and floors because it hides etching and feels natural and calm. Here is what it is and how to care for it.

What Is Honed Marble?

After marble is cut, it is ground smooth with abrasive pads. For a polished finish, grinding continues with ever finer pads until the surface reflects light like a mirror. For a honed finish, the process stops earlier, leaving a smooth, satin or matte surface.

How to Protect Honed Marble

Seal regularly. Honed marble is slightly more open-textured than polished, so it can absorb oil and liquids more easily. Seal every 6–12 months on counters.

Wipe spills promptly. Especially oil, haldi and coloured drinks.

Use pH-neutral cleaners. Avoid vinegar, lemon and bleach.

Use trays and coasters. Under oil bottles, perfume and glasses.

Clean with soft brushes if dirt settles into the matte surface.

Re-hone when needed. Professional honing can refresh worn areas evenly.

Can Polished Marble Be Converted to Honed?

Yes. A professional can hone polished marble on site, which is a common solution for kitchens and bathrooms where etching has become a problem.
