What Type of Rock Is Marble?

Marble is one of the most famous building and decorative stones in the world. From the Taj Mahal to the floors of Pakistani homes, it has been prized for centuries. But what kind of rock is it, and why does it behave the way it does? Here is a simple explanation.

What Type of Rock Is Marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock — a rock that has been transformed from another rock by heat and pressure.

The Three Types of Rock

Igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava. Examples: granite, basalt.

Sedimentary rocks form when layers of sediment, shells or minerals are compacted and cemented. Examples: limestone, sandstone, travertine.

Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure or mineral-rich fluids deep within the earth. Examples: marble, quartzite, slate.

How Does Marble Form?

Marble begins as limestone or dolomite — sedimentary rocks made largely of calcium carbonate, often from ancient shells and marine organisms. When these rocks are buried deep and exposed to heat and pressure during mountain-building, the calcite recrystallises into larger, interlocking crystals. Impurities such as clay, iron oxides, mica and graphite are redistributed into the veins and colours we see in marble.

What Is Marble Made Of?

Marble is mostly calcite (calcium carbonate). Some marbles contain dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate). Minor minerals create colour:

Rock vs Stone

"Rock" is the geological term for naturally occurring mineral matter. "Stone" usually refers to rock that has been quarried and shaped for use. So marble in a mountain is a rock; marble on your floor is a stone.

Why Marble Behaves the Way It Does

Because marble is made of calcite, it is relatively soft (about 3 on the Mohs scale) and reacts with acids — which causes etching. These same crystals allow it to take a beautiful polish and give it a soft translucence.

Is Marble Good for Homes?

Yes. Marble is excellent for floors, walls, bathrooms, staircases and decorative surfaces. In busy kitchens, it requires sealing and care with acids. Pakistan is rich in marble, with quarries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan producing stones such as Ziarat White, Badal and Sunny Grey.
