What is limestone?

Limestone forms on old sea floors, where shells and lime mud pile up and harden over millions of years. When limestone is heated and pressed it becomes marble, and travertine is a limestone formed by mineral springs. Many stones traded as "marble" are really dense limestones that take a polish.

Limestone FAQs

Is limestone the same as marble?

No, but they are related. Marble is limestone that has been changed by heat and pressure into a harder, crystalline stone. Both are calcium carbonate, so both are etched by acids.

Is limestone good for flooring?

Yes, a dense limestone in honed finish makes a beautiful, calm floor. Seal it and clean with a neutral stone soap. Avoid acidic cleaners.

Can limestone be used in the kitchen?

It can, but lemon, imli and vinegar will etch it, and oil can stain it if unsealed. For a busy desi kitchen, granite or quartz is easier to live with.

What is the difference between limestone and travertine?

Travertine is a type of limestone formed at mineral springs. It has natural holes and linear bands. Limestone is usually more even in texture.

Can I get limestone in Lahore?
