What is soapstone?
Soapstone forms when talc-rich rock is changed by heat and pressure. Talc makes it feel smooth, almost soapy, which gives the stone its name. Architectural soapstone has less talc and more hard minerals, so it is firm enough for counters and sinks.
Where soapstone works best
- Kitchen counters for people who do not want sealing
- Sinks and farmhouse basins
- Fireplace surrounds, hearths and wood-stove panels
- Pizza and baking surfaces
- Laboratory and work benches
Things to know before you buy
- It scratches. Knives and pots can leave marks. Light scratches are rubbed out with fine sandpaper and oil.
- It darkens. Freshly cut soapstone is light grey and goes dark charcoal with oil and use. Many owners like this patina.
- Edges can chip if hit hard, so rounded (eased) edges are best.
- Limited slab sizes. Slabs are usually smaller than granite, so long counters may need a joint.
Alternatives we stock
If you want a dark, low-care kitchen top without scratches, compare soapstone with leathered black granite such as Galaxy Black or Black Granite, or a matte black quartz.
Soapstone FAQs
Does soapstone stain?
No. It is dense and not porous, so oil, haldi and wine do not soak in. Spills wipe off. It also needs no sealer.
Can I put a hot pan on soapstone?
Yes. Soapstone handles heat very well and is used for stoves and fireplaces.
Does soapstone scratch easily?
Yes, it is softer than granite and marble. Scratches can be sanded out with fine sandpaper and a little mineral oil, so the top can always be refreshed.
Why does soapstone turn darker?
Oil and water darken the surface over time. Regular mineral oil gives an even dark charcoal colour. Without oil it darkens unevenly where it is used most.
