How Does Soapstone Form?
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock formed when talc-rich rocks are transformed by heat and pressure. Its high talc content makes it soft and smooth.

Types of Soapstone
- Artistic soapstone: very soft; used for carvings.
- Architectural soapstone: harder, with less talc; used for countertops and sinks.
How Does Granite Form?
Granite is an igneous rock formed when magma cools slowly underground, creating interlocking crystals of quartz and feldspar.
Types of Granite
Speckled, solid, shimmering and veined granites in nearly every colour. FB Marble stocks more than 45.
Appearance
Soapstone: soft grey to charcoal with subtle veins; matte; darkens and develops patina with oiling and use.
Granite: crystals and speckles in many colours; polished, honed or leathered finishes.
Cost
Soapstone must usually be imported into Pakistan and is premium with limited availability. Granite ranges from economical local stones (about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list) to premium imports.
Hardness
Soapstone: very soft (1–2 on the Mohs scale for pure talc; architectural grades somewhat harder) — scratches and dents easily.
Granite: 6–7 — very scratch-resistant.
Heat Resistance
Both are excellent.
Stain and Acid Resistance
Soapstone is non-porous and does not etch. Granite resists acids and stains when sealed.
Maintenance
Soapstone: regular oiling for even colour; scratches can be sanded.
Granite: occasional sealing for light colours.
Which Should You Choose?
For durability, availability and value in Pakistani kitchens, granite is the practical choice. For the soft charcoal look of soapstone, consider leathered or honed black granite such as Black Pearl or Galaxy Black.
