Carrara vs Calacatta: Understanding the Two Famous Marble Looks

"Carrara" and "Calacatta" are two names every homeowner hears when choosing white stone. Both describe white marble with grey veining, and both are now widely copied in quartz and porcelain. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right look for your budget and space.

What They Have in Common

Origin. Both names come from the same famous marble region in Italy, where white marble has been quarried for centuries.

Composition. Both are calcite-based metamorphic marble, so both are relatively soft, can etch with acids and need sealing.

Applications. Both are used for floors, walls, vanities, feature walls and tables. In kitchens they require careful maintenance.

How They Differ

Background colour. Carrara usually has a soft white to light grey background. Calacatta has a brighter, whiter background that looks crisp in daylight.

Veining. Carrara has fine, feathery, often blurry grey veins spread evenly across the slab. Calacatta has thicker, bolder veins, sometimes with gold, beige or charcoal tones, creating dramatic movement.

Availability. Carrara is quarried in much larger quantities, so it is easier to find. Calacatta is rarer, which makes it more exclusive.

Cost. Calacatta is generally much more expensive than Carrara because of its scarcity and demand.

Which Look Suits Your Home?

  • Carrara suits large floors, bathrooms and spaces where you want a calm, uniform look.
  • Calacatta works as a statement: a kitchen island, a TV wall or a master vanity where the veins become the focal point.

Getting the Look in Pakistan

Imported Italian marble is expensive and needs care. Most of our clients achieve these looks in three practical ways:

  1. Marble-look quartz. FB Marble stocks Carrara White, Carrara Grey, Calacatta Gold, Calacatta Wave and Calacatta Nova quartz. They give the same visual effect with no etching and no sealing.
  2. Porcelain slabs. Large-format porcelain in Calacatta and Statuario designs is excellent for walls and floors.
  3. Pakistani white marble. Ziarat White and Sunny White offer natural white stone at a fraction of the imported price, ideal for flooring.

Care Tips for Real Marble

  • Seal every 6–12 months on counters and vanities.
  • Wipe acidic spills immediately.
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners only.
  • Accept that a natural patina develops over time — many people love it.
