Marble or Quartz Countertops: Which Is Better for Your Home?

Marble and quartz are the two names that come up most when Pakistani families plan a new kitchen or bathroom. One is a natural stone formed over millions of years; the other is engineered for performance. Both can look beautiful, but they behave very differently.

Composition

Marble is a natural metamorphic rock made mostly of calcite. Every slab is unique. Pakistan produces excellent marbles such as Ziarat White, Badal and Sunny Grey.

Quartz is engineered: around 90–93% crushed natural quartz bonded with resin and pigments, pressed into slabs.

How They Are Formed

Marble forms when limestone is transformed by heat and pressure deep in the earth, then quarried in blocks and cut into slabs. Quartz is manufactured in factories, which allows consistent colour and pattern.

Appearance

Marble has depth, translucency and natural veining that no factory can fully copy. Quartz offers uniform colours and marble-look designs (Calacatta Gold, Carrara White) that look consistent from slab to slab.

Durability and Hardness

Quartz is harder and more resistant to scratches and chips. Marble is softer and can scratch or chip at edges.

Stain Resistance and Porosity

Marble is porous and needs sealing. Haldi, oil and chai can stain it if left. Quartz is non-porous and very stain-resistant.

Heat Resistance

Here marble wins. As a natural stone it tolerates warm pans better. Quartz resin can discolour or crack under very high heat, so trivets are essential.

Ease of Maintenance

Quartz: soap and water, no sealing. Marble: pH-neutral cleaners, regular sealing, quick cleanup of acids — lemon and vinegar etch it.

Accessibility and Cost

Pakistani marble is very affordable and widely available. Imported marble can be expensive. Quartz falls in a mid-to-premium range depending on design.

Which Is Better Where?

  • Kitchen counters in a busy home: quartz.
  • Floors and staircases: marble (or granite).
  • Bathroom vanities: either; quartz is lower maintenance.
  • Dining and centre tables: marble for its luxury feel.
  • Feature walls: marble or marble-look quartz.
