Quartz or Quartzite: Which Is Better for Kitchens and Vanities?

The names are confusingly similar, and salespeople sometimes use them interchangeably — but quartz and quartzite are very different materials. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right one for your kitchen or bathroom.

Defining Quartz and Quartzite

Quartz is an engineered stone made of about 90–93% crushed natural quartz bonded with resin and pigments in a factory.

Quartzite is a natural metamorphic stone formed when sandstone is transformed by heat and pressure into a dense, crystalline rock. It is quarried and cut into slabs like granite and marble.

Hardness

Both are hard — around 7 on the Mohs scale. Quartzite's hardness is natural and consistent through the stone; quartz's comes from its quartz content.

Scratch Resistance

Both resist scratches from knives and utensils very well.

Stain Resistance

Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing. Quartzite has pores and should be sealed, usually once a year in kitchens.

Chip Resistance

The resin in quartz gives it a little flexibility. Quartzite can be brittle at sharp edges, so rounded edges are wise.

Heat Resistance

Quartzite wins. As a natural stone, it tolerates hot cookware well. Quartz resin can scorch under direct high heat.

UV Resistance

Quartzite can be used outdoors and in strong sun. Quartz may fade or yellow in direct sunlight over time.

Appearance

Quartz offers controlled, consistent designs — including convincing marble-looks such as Calacatta Gold and Carrara White. Quartzite offers unique natural patterns, often with a crystalline sparkle and soft, marble-like veining.

Cost

Quartzite is usually more expensive because of its rarity and the difficulty of cutting and polishing it. Quartz spans a wide range from affordable plain colours to premium designs.

Which Is Better for You?

  • Low-maintenance kitchen: quartz.
  • Natural stone lover who cooks at high heat: quartzite.
  • Bathroom vanity: either works well.
  • Outdoor kitchen or sunny terrace: quartzite (or granite).
  • Tight budget: quartz in a standard design, or Pakistani granite.

Beware of Mislabelling

Some soft marbles are sold as "quartzite". Test samples by scratching glass — real quartzite will scratch it.
