Marble or Granite: Which Countertop Will Last Longer?

Both marble and granite have been used in buildings for thousands of years, and both can easily outlast the house they are installed in. Look at the Mughal monuments of Lahore — their stonework has survived centuries. So the real question is not whether they last, but how they age in daily use.

Marble Stone

Marble is a metamorphic rock made mainly of calcite. Pakistan is one of the world's great marble countries, with quarries in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa producing stones such as Ziarat White, Badal, Sunny Grey and Botticino.

Key facts: Mohs hardness about 3; moderately porous; reacts with acids; good heat tolerance; feels cool underfoot.

Ease of maintenance: Seal every 6–12 months on counters and vanities. Use pH-neutral cleaners. Wipe acidic spills immediately.

Sealing: Essential for kitchen and bathroom surfaces to slow stain absorption.

Outdoor use: Possible on walls, columns and some steps, but polished marble can be slippery when wet and may weather over time.

Granite Stone

Granite is an igneous rock made of quartz, feldspar and mica that crystallised slowly from magma deep underground.

Key facts: Mohs hardness about 6–7; low porosity, especially in dark colours; resists kitchen acids; excellent heat resistance.

Ease of maintenance: Seal light colours about once a year; dark granites need sealing far less often.

Outdoor use: Excellent. Granite is ideal for car porches, stairs, boundary walls and pool surrounds, especially in flamed or leather finishes.

Which Lasts Longer?

Structurally, both will last for generations. The difference is in appearance over time. Granite keeps its "new" look much longer in kitchens because it resists scratches, stains and etching. Marble develops a patina of soft etch marks and gentle wear — some people love this lived-in character, as seen in old European kitchens, while others find it frustrating.

Recommendations by Area

  • Floors: marble indoors for elegance; granite for entrances and high traffic.
  • Stairs: granite for heavy use; marble for formal interiors.
  • Bathrooms: either; marble for luxury, granite for low maintenance.
  • Outdoors: granite.
