Granite or Marble: How to Pick the Right Stone for Each Room

Rather than asking "which stone is better", a more useful question is "which stone is better for this room?" Granite and marble each excel in different places. Here is how they form, how they look and a practical room-by-room guide for Pakistani homes.

How Is Marble Formed?

Marble begins as limestone. Deep underground, heat and pressure recrystallise the calcite, creating a denser stone with flowing veins formed by minerals such as iron, mica and clay.

Variations of Marble

Marble comes in whites (Ziarat White, Sunny White), greys (Sunny Grey, Grey Emperador), beiges (Botticino, Cream Marfil), browns (Chocolate Brown, Coffee Brown), blacks (Silky Black, Black and Gold) and reds (Rosso Verona). FB Marble stocks 19 marble types.

How Is Granite Formed?

Granite forms when magma cools slowly deep underground, allowing large crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica to grow and lock together.

Variations of Granite

Granite comes in blacks, browns, whites, greys, greens, blues and pinks, in speckled, solid or wavy patterns. FB Marble stocks more than 45 granites.

Appearance

Marble shows soft veining and a slight translucence — elegant and calm. Granite shows crystals, speckles and sometimes bold waves — lively and natural.

Cost

Both have economical local options. Pakistani granite starts at about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list, and local marble is very affordable for flooring. Imported marble and exotic granite are premium.

Room-by-Room Guide

Kitchen counters: granite for heat and stain resistance, or quartz for no sealing. Marble only if you accept patina.

Lounge and bedroom floors: marble — elegant, cool underfoot and easy to restore.

Entrance, porch and driveway: granite in flamed or leather finish for grip and durability.

Stairs: granite for heavy traffic and external stairs; marble for formal interior staircases.

Bathrooms: marble on walls and floors for luxury; granite or quartz on vanities for easy care.

Outdoor areas: granite — it withstands sun, rain and dust.

Feature walls and TV walls: marble or onyx for drama.

Dining tables: marble for elegance, with coasters and placemats.

A Mixed Approach

Most Pakistani homes combine both: marble floors throughout, granite in the kitchen and on the porch, and perhaps onyx as a highlight. This balances beauty, practicality and budget.
