What Is Cultured Marble?
Cultured marble is a man-made material. Crushed marble or limestone dust is mixed with polyester resin and pigments, poured into moulds and covered with a clear gel coat that gives it shine. It is often moulded with an integrated basin.
What Is Granite?
Granite is a natural igneous stone quarried from the earth, cut into slabs and polished. It is hard, heat-resistant and durable.
Cultured Marble: Characteristics
Appearance
Uniform, glossy and often with printed-looking veins. It can look artificial up close.
Durability
The gel coat can scratch, crack, dull or yellow over time. Hot hair tools can blister or burn it.
Maintenance
Non-porous and easy to wipe, but it needs non-abrasive cleaners to protect the gel coat. Damage is difficult to repair invisibly.
Cost
Generally inexpensive, especially for standard vanity sizes.
Granite: Characteristics
Appearance
Natural depth, crystals and colour variation; every piece is unique.
Durability
Very hard and heat-resistant; resists scratches and lasts for decades.
Maintenance
Light granites need occasional sealing; dark granites need little care. Chips can be repaired.
Cost
Local Pakistani granite starts from about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list — often comparable to or only slightly more than cultured products for small vanities.
