Granite

Hard, heat-resistant and durable. Granite handles hot pots, oil and daily scrubbing better than almost any natural stone. Local Pakistani granites start from about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list, making it excellent value. Light colours need yearly sealing.

Best for: busy kitchens, stairs, outdoor areas.

Marble

Elegant, cool and timeless, with beautiful veining. Marble is softer and etches with lemon and vinegar, so it needs care in kitchens.

Best for: floors, walls, vanities, dining tables and baking stations.

Quartz

Engineered from natural quartz and resin. Non-porous, no sealing and available in a huge range of colours including marble-looks. Protect from high heat.

Quartzite

A natural stone that looks like marble but is much harder. Needs sealing and is priced at the premium end.

Best for: luxury kitchens wanting natural stone with durability.

Porcelain Slabs

Thin, light and extremely resistant to heat, scratches and UV. Available in large formats with stone-look designs.

Best for: walls, floors, outdoor kitchens and modern counters.

Onyx

Translucent and spectacular, especially when backlit. Pakistani green onyx is famous worldwide. It is softer and best for feature walls, bar fronts and decorative pieces rather than work surfaces.

Travertine

Warm and textured, with natural holes. Better for floors, walls and bathrooms than for kitchen counters.

Slate

Matte and dark, heat-resistant but softer than granite. Limited availability in Pakistan.

Solid Surface and Laminate

Budget options. Solid surface allows seamless joints; laminate is very cheap. Both are less durable and less heat-resistant than stone.

How to Choose

Think about budget, maintenance, heat, style and resale value. Many Pakistani homes mix materials — quartz or granite in the kitchen, marble on floors, granite on stairs and porches, onyx as a feature.
