What Is Solid Surface?
Solid surface is made from acrylic or polyester resin mixed with mineral fillers, cast into sheets. It can be joined almost invisibly and shaped into integrated sinks and curved designs.
Stain Resistance
- Solid surface: non-porous; resists most stains but can absorb strong dyes over time.
- Granite: resists stains well when sealed, especially dark colours.
- Quartz: excellent — non-porous with no sealing needed.

Scratch Resistance
- Solid surface: scratches easily from knives and utensils, but light scratches can be sanded out.
- Granite: excellent scratch resistance.
- Quartz: excellent scratch resistance.
Heat Resistance
- Solid surface: poor; hot pans can scorch, discolour or crack it.
- Granite: excellent; ideal near the stove.
- Quartz: moderate; use trivets.
Seams
Solid surface allows nearly invisible seams and integrated sinks. Granite and quartz have neat but visible joints.
Repairability
Solid surface can be sanded and repaired easily. Granite chips can be filled. Quartz repairs are possible but harder to make invisible.
Appearance
Solid surface tends to look uniform and slightly plastic. Granite has natural depth. Quartz offers consistent designs including marble-looks.
Cost
Solid surface and quartz can be similar in price. Local granite is often the most economical of the three.
