What is slate?
Slate forms when clay-rich shale is pressed and slightly heated deep underground. The clay minerals line up in parallel sheets, so the stone splits cleanly into flat layers. That split face gives slate its natural texture, and iron and other minerals give the rust, green and purple shades.
Where slate works best
- House elevations and boundary walls (stacked ledger panels)
- Feature walls in lounges, TV walls and receptions
- Garden paths, patios and pool surrounds
- Outdoor steps and porches
- Fireplace surrounds and roofing
Things to know before you buy
- Grades differ a lot. Low grades can flake (spall) layer by layer. Choose dense slate with low absorption for outdoor and floor use.
- Uneven surface. Natural cleft tiles vary in thickness, so the floor fixing needs an experienced mason.
- Seal it indoors. A penetrating sealer keeps oil and dirt out of the texture.
- Colour varies. Multicolour slate changes from tile to tile. Mix boxes before fixing.
Alternatives we stock
For house fronts, compare slate with vein-cut travertine and flamed granite. Both are also used for elevations.
Slate FAQs
Is slate good for house elevation in Pakistan?
Yes. Good-quality slate absorbs little water and has a rich natural texture, so it is widely used for front elevations and boundary walls. It handles sun and rain well. Use a dense grade and proper wall fixing.
Is slate slippery when wet?
Natural cleft slate has good grip even when wet. That is why it is used for patios, pool surrounds and steps. Polished slate is smoother, so it is better indoors.
Does slate need sealing?
Outdoors, a breathable sealer helps keep moss and dirt out. Indoors, especially in kitchens, a sealer stops oil stains.
Why is my slate flaking?
Lower-grade slate can flake (spall) when water enters between its layers. Choosing dense slate, fixing it with full mortar bed and sealing it reduces this.
